The fight goes on...

And I am tired.

Tired of causes, of interests, of hobbies.  Tired of the endless Internet chatter of affirmations and discoveries, secret plots and sunny family photos of nothing.  I am tired of writing hundreds of diatribes to idiots and slackers and stoners who all want to legalize cannabis but have not one single clue of how to get off their asses and get something done in a unified fashion.

I am deathly tired of lazy liberals who want to post about the revolution and call for Change but still cling to the same fake badges that wanted to cut them up for bait.  People who aren't ready to sacrifice and expect an easy path to revolution and victory.

The only thing guaranteed in a revolution is casualties.

Where does it start, and where does it end?  Do we rise up, and revolt, join the idiots at Occupy and immediately launch a coup to seize that movement before it is giving away useless college loans to univesities without the government support to offer decent classes or teachers? 

Do we re-invent the wheel and begin our own movement, or do we rely on the folks at NORML to finally end their comfortable rearguard action of polls and meetings and endless verbal jousting with the Federal government and actually call for a general strike?

Do we face armed Guardsmen and police with non-violence as we are teargassed and beaten and forced off of our own public parks and public lands? 

I have loved and defended this land, right and wrong, for most of my life, inside its borders and beyond.  I have accepted that the corrupt men in high places who sell poison to our children and old people have a right to make laws controlling my use of an herb. Instead of speaking out, or acting, I simply participated in the black market and reveled, to some degree, at my participation in the game that keeps such men in power.  I danced on my strings, grazed with the herd, and wished someone else would do something about legalizing cannabis.

Then I fell in love with an MS patient, and saw firsthand what prescription drugs were doing to her, and saw as well the heroic spirit fighting inside the pain and disability for just a little space to breath.  I saw the immediate relief when she tried cannabis, and I watched the fear she went through at the prospect of blood tests; tests that would reveal the damage the 'scripts had done to her organs; tests with the potential for positive THC results that would disqualify her for housing and grocery assistance, Medicaid, Medicare, and her SSDI monthly income.  It didn't matter that for $400 each month she could replace $2,500-3000 in prescriptions and the inevitable cost of damaged liver, spleen and kidneys. 

Or perhaps it did matter, to the very corporations that fund the Drug War while applying for (and getting) patents for cannabis-derived medicines.  Perhaps it is for this reason, and not any "gateway drug" propaganda, that the same Federal government which arrests MS, cancer, and PTSD patients for possession and production of cannabis has reserved for itself a patent on cannabis-derived medical pain and nerve applications.

I find myself at the point where Malcolm X once stood; I would seriously advise the leaders of this nation to heed those who would only see change come non-violently.   You have made non-violent change increasingly impossible, and you would seem to wish violent change to become inevitable, to justify the killings and beatings, the arrests and lives destroyed, the riot police, the teargas, the dogs and barricades, the FEAR and LIES used to destroy the textile industries and farmers of the south and the freedoms of a nation.

How can you expect men and women of honor to stand unresisting after such a long history of abuses and injustice from their fellow countrymen and the government which was formed to serve all citizens, without respect to economic or social standing?  After a decades-long war of  physical and spritiual assaults against our homes, families and selves, seizure of our properties and destruction of our state-licensed and approved businesses and thus our very means of earning a living; of public slander and distortion, of suppression of scientific facts and denial of succor to those in pain, how can you expect us to simply hold hands and sing as you wade into our midst, jackboots and nightsticks swinging in a fog of mace?

For too long have we remained silent.  For too long have we danced to the tune of a malicious piper.

Do not place your faith in the Vote.  All those vying for the Throne would wear the crown, not thrust it back into the hands of the People. 

Men will talk of States' rights when States are all that they can control.  But when a man stands in the highest office in the land and rules the destiny of ALL states, that appreciation for autonomy fades rapidly before the headiest drug of all: POWER.

The Vote is simply the Carrot, with which the forces of corruption and Tyranny will lead you on toward the unattainable goal of Change From Within the System.  It is a tragic comedy in which the masks change but the true players remain the same.  There can be no change in the system when there is no opportunity for outsiders to enter the system.  Those who have been bred and groomed to survive in the Political and Corporate jungle have closed the gates against outside interference or change.  The police, public opinion, your church, your place in the community, arrest, discomfort, imprisonment, public infamy and slander, these are all the Stick, used without compassion against those who would point out the fallacies, the Illusion of the Will of the People, and stand up rather than meekly bow before the show of force.

We stand at a crux, at a time of important decisions and great actions.  In flight navigation, in climbing mountains, in piloting uncertain seas, and at certain points in history, there comes a time of final choices, a Point of No Return.

The question is simple.

Is peace so dear and life so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?

ALMIGHTY GOD FORBID IT!!!

I know not what others may do, but as for me, GIVE ME LIBERTY, OR GIVE ME DEATH!

A New Declaration

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

On March 13, 2009 United States Attorney General Eric Holder issued a statement that the United States had abandoned the Bush administration term "enemy combatant".   The statement said, ""As we work toward developing a new policy to govern detainees, it is essential that we operate in a manner that strengthens our national security, is consistent with our values, and is governed by law."

Am I the only one who believes they got those three priorities in the wrong order?  Now that the same rules and definitions apply equally to all United States citizens who chose to dissent or non-violently protest?  And we are "developing a new policy", no doubt requiring legions of regulatory bureaucrats and a study group or three, to re-invent the wheel; shoving through the fading line called personal privacy and basic Rights to spend more and more of our taxes denying us our freedoms.

It has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

Back in the Hole.

The Power Couple spent yesterday hiking and snapping pics of assorted crags before snatching out packs and heading up Reed's Creek to enjoy some stretches and pulls on a sweet new line, Mike Stewart and Company's "Rain", a new 5.9 at the right end of The Reach.

Relaxed later with our buddy Mike D, enjoyed some fine music we'd carried away from our visit to the Purple Fiddle in Davis, WV on our first night back in town.

Up and out early this morning to count bolts and snap more pics, with the river high and the air much cooler than Thursday's mid-80s. Amazing flood debris piled high among the boulders and buds pushing from the tip of every branch. Cindy and I dodge drops as we eyeball lines and try to spot bolts amid poison ivy and tree branches.

Back at the Casa D now with my lovely wife cleaning and sorting gear and a couple of plates of leftover megaburritos from Hellbender Burritos.

Inbound LSC students and good weather for the weekend... life looks good.

You all might have noticed a storm front crossing the country as a massive cold system moved west to east. It is no coincidence that at exactly the same time that a certain little blue truck began moving east from the gates of Joshua Tree



-racing across the California and arizona deserts ahead of the storm that would dump a foot of snow on the Superstitions three days later, almost burying the base camp of Ronin and Mrs. Pinkpants.

(Truth be told, we were ready for a break after two days of incredible climbing in the Troll Hut in North Devils' Canyon-





-but a foot of snow per day with more on the way was a bit much.)

Forecasts led us led us to bail, moving south towards the Western Stronghold and Tucson.

In seventy-two hours, we crossed New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, and half of Virginia, to arrive in the Shenandoah Valley exactly three days after setting out.

Two days of seclusion and decompression have released all the karmic angst and left us ready to get after it, with apologies to anyone we might have left out of the loop. Sooo... don't be surprised to see plates from points west... Just sayin' :)

A Change of Seasons- Tales of the Knight Errant

Wind shrieks across the construction site next to the street, throwing huge sheets of red dust into the air, strewing trash and unsecured tarps across the cityscape. The bright morning sun has faded to a flat, steely light, as a hand-like shroud of mantle cloud races across Elden's summit, stretching out from the now-unseen Kachina Peaks with icy fingers that drop postage stamp sized flakes into the maelstrom as I navigate the unweildy box truck through the streets of Flagstaff on my morning run.

Wednesday, Cindy and I hiked through the boulders of the Fat Man's Loop to picnic on the shoulder of the mountain under sunny skies with temps in the upper 60s and low 70s. This morning, the temperature has fallen from an initial 10 am high of 52F to a current 38, with wind chill taking it down below freezing, a fact made obvious as the small SUV ahead of me fishtails in what was a puddle only an hour before.

One of my regular diners at the Food Center waves from the lee of an abandoned garage, his unruly beard whipping in the wind. I make a note to start a pot of coffee when I get back to the Center... many of my regulars will have spent the morning chilling down in this wind and many are diabetics whose ability to generate internal heat is undependable under these conditions.

Boxes of vegetables and pastries and lunchmeat, tubs of milk and yogurt and cases of day-old bread come off in a rush, the transition from the frigid wind into the humidity and bright laughter of the kitchen jarring after the solitude of my run. I try to remember names and find room as volunteers greet me and Wilson Picket wails from the sound machine on the shelf. Bob, the chef of the day, smiles and peers at me through his glasses, one hand resting on my shoulder in a brief squeeze of greeting amid the hustle and bustle of mid morning prep and triage. Big Jim nods and grimaces, rolling his eyes at the endless stream of conversations as he mechanically sprays and stacks metal trays, cutting boards, and food bins, loading and unloading the washer, moving through the kitchen with an odd grace for a man his size as he navigates the swirling currents of bodies and words to hang up pots and empty trash cans.

I start a five-gallon batch of tea and spend some time directing my day's Community Service workers in various tasks of morning set-up. One is a recovering alcoholic, slow but earnest, the other, an angry youth too full of his own angst to even try to care or operate with anything like efficiency or attention to detail. I sigh an inward sigh, remember my own youth, and assign them to tasks.

In the give-away area, I sort and hang clothes, set out loaves of bread and cans of vegetables and fruit and soup, and place the non-slip floor mats for the night's serving session. A glance at the clock shows I have exactly three minutes to gather my effects and hit the road for the next pick-up.

Driving snow greets me as I step through the rear door of the kitchen, double checking the lock of the truck and quickly climbing into the cab. The wind rocks the vehicle as Creedance Clearwater Revival fills the interior with "Bad Moon" and I pilot the big white truck out into Flagstaff traffic, just another errant knight on a mission of mercy.

Cold Light

Cold light slices across the blue morning shadows of Flagstaff; compounded of one part fog to two parts morning rush hour. Fourth Avenue is a long stretch of fading hope and faltering enterprise; peeling restaurant signs and broken sidewalks and new names on familiar buildings, the words "AVAILABLE!" AND "FOR LEASE, BUILD TO SUIT" silently shouted again and again from darkened interiors filled with broken shelves and abandoned desks.

Behind a dumpster, I see a flash a wind-whipped flame above a dented can, quickly hidden by the angry, black-dyed, stud-pierced, Goth-struck sprite who glares back at me in a world-weary apathy that is far too old for her tender years. Natives standing huddled in a group, counting change outside the Circle K; two black-clad working girls fishing for the last customers of the night or just a ride back to whatever tiny apartment they share; a Glenn Ford replica real life cowboy striding along the street in denim and leather, hat pulled low over weathered features, eyes nested in a wrinkled tapestry of wind and sun, hard work and laughter and loss. Breath streams out in a ghostly banner from beneath the battered brim of his Stetson, fading like memories.

Clouds wreathe the top of the Kachina Peaks, the snow-draped shoulders below alive with moving shadows. Lines of cliffs draw my eye up away from the light as I sit waiting, and an impatient horn reminds me that I am still operating in the present.

Flagstaff holds so much potential, and so much promise, balanced against so many promises and lives broken and wasted on the way. Every day, so many battle with such determination to reach what may be an illusion, and so many more come face to face with the cold hard facts of simple existence. those who a handful of years ago dwelt in comfort and ease find themselves operating on a budget for the first time in years, sometimes in a lifetime. Those who once succeeded by dint of hard work find the water levels slowly rising, as they stroke for what seems like a receding shore.

But on every hand, generous people reach out caring hands to lift up the fallen, to shelter, feed or simply comfort the weary, the broken, the lost. Again and again, the greatest gifts, those of compassion and shared humanity, are given, freely and in abundance, by those who are themselves often struggling to make ends meet, no more than a single paycheck or whim of fate away from the streets.

The sun rises higher, and in the rising reds and golds of dawn, I see the glittering of a thousand ice crystals, and think of beauty, even in the cold light of truth.






Sorry for the long break, Gentle Readers... I have been busy trying to make a life and look after a lovely wife, as well as submitting a manuscript for a new guidebook to the crags and byways of Smoke Hole Canyon, the amazing locale where Cindy and I lived in West Virginia.
